40 Day to a Better Me: Day 19–Embrace Change!

Ever watch a zombie movie? My uncle Dalton took me to the local Drive Inn to see “Night of the Living Dead” when I was barley 8 years old. What was he thinking? I slept with the light on for the next five years.

The thing I find interesting about zombie movies is how “into” them some people get. They have seen every brain-eating flick and know all of the proper protocols for zombie culture. They will even argue among one another about which is the greatest zombie movie ever. I laugh. To me the whole premise is laughable. Hence, the only two zombie movies I love to watch are “Shaun of the Dead” and “Zombieland” (Two movies which spoof the whole zombie genre).

You may ask why I find zombie movies a joke and waste of time. The reason is because they are completely unbelievable. This is because those who produce such films fail to take into consideration one simple fact: the evolution of mankind moves forward not backward. The Zombies are devolved humans. That ain’t ever gonna happen. Mankind never moves backward, but always forward. Zombie movie makers fail to understand that everything changes and progresses. But, they ain’t the only ones.

I have talked with people who are always bemoaning the advances of our culture and society. They feel that things are complicated and life needs to be simpler. They always recall the good old days! Yeah. Where they had to walk five miles to school in ten feet of snow! Those were the days when the restroom was located forty yards behind the house. And, those where the days when a simple infection could kill you deader than a hammer! There was no vaccine for polio, TB or numerous other terrible diseases back in the good old days. I for one, do want to go back to those good old days, I want to move forward to the greater days that are ahead!

People don’t like change because of fear. It is the fear of the unknown that holds us captive to the past. The more we resist change the more out of touch we become with what is taking place around us. You can resist change all you want, but the fact is things will change whether you like it or not.

Sam Walton was a shop keeper in a small Arkansas town. A bigger store moved in and his small business took a hit. Sam was faced with one of two options: he could keep doing business like he was and end up closing shop or he could embrace change. He chose the latter and revolutionized the discount shopping industry. People want to vilify Walton. They want to say he shut down businesses across the country. But the truth is, those businesses shut themselves down by refusing to embrace change. Walton saw it and understanding that he could not beat back the future, took it by the horns!

The world is changing at dizzying speed. You can shut down and let the zombie of fear eat your brains if you want to or you can embrace the change and move forward. You are never too old to learn a new skill, a new hobby or new technology. The only thing holding you back is you. Embrace the change.
