Turkey, Football, and Pumpkin Pie!

in everything give thanks; for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus for you–1 Thesaslonians 5.18 NKJV

This week we in the United States celebrate “Thanksgiving.” It is a traditional holiday where family, friends will gather together to eats lots of pumpkin pie and watch football all day. But it was not always so.

History tells us that Thanksgiving was first celebrated by Pilgrims (Puritan Protestants) who came to the New World from England. They came to establish a colony where they could practice their religious catechisms with out fear of governmental interference.

They arrived in Massachusetts late in the year and were ill prepared for what lay ahead of them. Consequently, Their first year was frot with hardships and many died. So, when harvest came they gave “thanks” to God for their making it through the year alive.

Today, the spiritual significance of the holiday is downplayed for one reason or another. I feel that spirituality is not something that can be mandated by our governemnt. And, that it should be something private and comes from the heart. But in the holiday hub-bub, it is easy to loose focus of the things in life we are really thansful for. We all need a spiritual reminder.

This year eat your pie and add whip cream to it. Laugh at the corny jokes that someone may tell you. Watch foot ball and cheer for your favorite team. But, also look around at those closest to you and express your thankfulness for having in them in your life. Be thanskful for the things you have and that you have made it to through another year. But this isn’t something you should do only one day a year. It should be something you do everyday. Thanksgiving day can be everyday! try and see how it will imporve the quality fo your life.
