All You Need is Love

“For God loved the world so much that he gave his one and only Son, so that everyone who believes in him will not perish but have eternal life.” John 3.16 NLT

The Beatles John, Paul, George and Ringo said it so eloquently that “love is all you need.”The song “all you need is love” was first perfromed by the Beatles on the BBC program “Our World”. The program was broadcast on June 25, 1967 via satellite to 26 countries and estimated to have been watched by 400 million people . The lyrics became a mantra at a time of social and political change. The funny thing is that theose who wrote and sang the words, became conflicted with one another and the Beatles eventually fell apart. And, anaomisty existed among them for years.  Kinda makes ya wonder if they really believed what they said.

Anyone can claim to love It is easy to say. But love is more than a just a word. I think many define love as a noun.  You rememeber what a noun is don’t you?  A person, place or thing. However in reality love is  a verb and a verb denotes action. The real litmus test of love is the compassion that one demonstrates toward others.

Love is the central characteristic of God’s nature. God is just, merciful, righteous, and holy because God is love. Everything in God and of God is all rooted in the fact that God is love. And, because God is love, His actions are all established in love as well. The verse I used as a text today demosntrates that fact. God isn’t a giver so therefore He loves.  God is love therefore He gives. God’s generosity is based upon the fact that he is love.  Can a person give and not love? Absolutely!  But here is the rub: a person cannot love without giving.

It is Thansgiving time.  Many of us will designated a time and location to meet with family and friends and celebrate the holiday.  We will welcome one another’s company.  he will feast on food that was prepared specifically for the event.  And, we wil lno doubt do a lot of hugging and other expressions of love. There is nothing wrong with this and I encourage people to celebrate in the afore mentioned manner.  But, I also ask one thing; show love to those who need it the most.

As you are checking out at the supermarket–donate to those who are homeless and hungry.  Volunteer a few hours at a local shelter or a somewhere that will be serving meals to individuals with no place to go.  Visit the sick and feeble and bring cheer to their lives.  It may take some time from your schedule. But it will demonstrate your love for others.  If the genersoity of God is going to be demonstrated in our world, it will be done by people like you and me.  Be free to love today!
