“Just because you’re paranoid don’t mean they’re not after you”

The bug zapper! When I was a boy the sadistic tool of insect extermination was introduced to the American public.  It was an awesome thing that would keep troubled young men as me occupied for great lengths of time.  I sat enthralled as bug after unsuspecting bug would be helplessly mesmerized by its inviting glow of death.  Just when they became comfortable with the illumination of the light, the bug would be zapped” right before your eyes. The bug never saw it coming.

Conspiracy theories have been around for thousands of years.  Granted there have been actual conspiracies, the assassinations of Julius Caesar and Lincoln, the crucifixion of Christ and the creation of Barney.  But for the most part conspiracies are a crock.  And, the more elaborate of a conspiracy it is the bigger the crock.  Let’s face it governments are run by inept bureaucrats with big mouths.  A big government conspiracy would remain a secret about as long as a piece of raw meat in a pack of wolves.  Someone would be spilling their guts to get their fifteen minutes of fame and a multi-million dollar book deal.  The bigger the conspiracy the less likely it is to be true.

Conspiracy theories work like bug zappers.  Unsuspecting people are drawn in. They try to fight the urge to go deeper but they just can’t fight it.  They become helpless to the lure of the craziness of the theory.  They get sucked into the depths of stupid and then they are overwhelmed by it.  Hypnotized by the insanity, they follow the trail of lunacy down the rabbit hole to sip tea with the Mad Hatter.  They lament on how utterly blinded the majority of people are to the “truth”.  They read it on the internet! And, everyone knows you can’t post anything that isn’t true on the internet!  Oui! Oui! As Kurt Cobain said, “just because you’re paranoid doesn’t mean they’re not after you.”Oh, the zapper has them!

My rant comes in reaction to the unbelievable stupidity conspiracy theorists are propagating concerning the shooting at Sandy Hook Elementary. They claim that the shooting was an elaborate hoax created by our government to enforce stricter gun control. The utter callousness of the conspiracy theorist is incorrigible.   To capitalize upon a tragedy of this magnitude, coupled with complete disregard for the grieving, is deplorable.  The individuals purporting this “theory” are just as evil and wicked as the man who gunned down 20 small children.  And, just like their whack job counterparts from Westboro Baptist Church, they hide behind their first amendment rights.  They are cowards.

So, what am I getting at?  It is this: just as long as there are people there will be stupid people, who believe stupid stuff and spread stupid stories.  If you want to live your life looking for a booger man in everything, go right ahead. But keep your stupid to yourself.
